Spacelab9 Release “The Blacklist” Vinyl for Record Store Day

 

Record Store Day is upon us once again, this year it is taking place on the 16th of April. Spacelab9, in partnership with Madison Gate Records are releasing a deluxe vinyl package, featuring music from the first two series of the top rated NBC hit television series ‘The Blacklist’. For anyone not familiar with the series which began in 2013, the story revolves around Raymond “Red” Reddington, (James Spader) one of the most wanted fugitives on the FBI’s list. He surrenders himself to the FBI in an attempt to work together and bring down criminals and terrorists on his Blacklist with one condition, he works with rookie profiler Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone).

 

 

The LP itself is, a one-time only vinyl pressing which is limited to 1500 copies and is presented in a full colour sleeve with a promo shot of James Spader portraying his character and managing to looking terribly menacing but suave at the same time. The record is a gorgeous vibrant tone of red, and is complimented by a 16-page 12” x 12” booklet. The booklet contains detailed information on several names on Reddington’s blacklist such as Milton Bobbit and Luther Braxton. There is an enticing bonus feature of chunks of encrypted text that can only be read when viewed through the red vinyl itself.

 

The tracks on the LP are from the first two series of The Blacklist, the playlist on the show are chosen by music supervisor John Bissell and the series creator and executive producer Jon Bokenkamp.

 

The record features 12 tracks, a mixture of newer modern artists and classic more well known artists.

There is a page in the booklet exclusively allocated to John Bissell talking in detail about how the music is chosen for The Blacklist. Personally I find the soundtrack on the show to be a big draw, the songs which are often unexpected choice’s aren’t just there as background music fillers they actually add intensity and stir up feelings which can jump from excitement to love to sadness. I adore the use of the song “Sundown” by Gordon Lightfoot, it is used to its full potential when Reddington puts it on the turntable, places the needle on the record and the scene plays out and mirrors the lyrics.

Record Store Day is taking place in several countries including Australia, USA, UK and many European Countries. This is the ninth year it has taken place but it is continuing to build on its success further each year mainly because of the explosion of renewed interest for owning vinyl. Record Store Day sees many labels both independent and the big hitters releasing limited edition vinyl, some exclusive brand new offerings, and many older re-issued classics.
