Skye Steele ~ "Back In The Valley" ~ Live Solo Acoustic

At the end of the day's shooting for the music video for the studio version of this song, we gathered everyone involved for a little hang at the Labor Union Hall in Missoula. Not everyone had a chance to hear the song during the day's shoot, so we had an impromptu performance. Here it is. The *official* music video from that weekend, of which this is not a part, is to be released in January. Camera by Justin Reichert. Editing by Marshall Granger. Directed by Skye Grace Bennett.

Linaberry. It’s hard to put your finger on it, but when the musician takes the stage, surrounded by his many instruments, suddenly creating sound, projecting noise, drumming up long-gestating emotions, you know he’s transformed; a sense of purpose and poise envelops the air. “It’s very easy to be a different person when it comes to this project,” says Linaberry, who performs and completely inhabits the persona of the early-twentieth-century blues musician, The Bones of J.R. Jones. “For me it’s an outlet more than anything else.” It’s via the live show that The Bones of J.R. Jones has established itself as a spellbinding musical force: there’s Linaberry, all by his lonesome, playing several instruments – guitar, banjo, bass drum, high-hat – all at once, transforming any setting, no matter how visibly modern, into an old-time roadside juke joint. Now, over several years performing, the traveling troubadour has refined his craft so poignantly as to craft a batch of highly refined, barn-burning blues and folk numbers. They take the form of Dark Was The Yearling, The Bones of J.R. Jones’ mesmerizing new LP. The first full-length effort, both jarring and meditative in its juxtaposition of snarling electric guitar licks (“Fury of the Light”), banjo backbeats (“St. James’ Bed”) and acoustic charm (“The Plan”), is bookended by twin takes on the foot-stomping “Dreams to Tell.” “That songs never gets old to me,” says Linaberry. “I felt like the album needed two versions of it… for better or worse.” The album’s highlight however, is undoubtedly “The Dark,” a somber ode to the musician’s late grandfather. The harmonic hymnal, written in the hours following the passing of a man whom Linaberry describes as “very much the patriarch” of his family, ended up shaping the entirety of the album, “giving it a much more heavier sound near the end of it. “That was one of those rare instances that a song did come out in 24 hours,” Linaberry says of “The Dark.” “And it really hasn’t changed since then.” Crafted by Linaberry over the past year and half following the release of 2012’s The Wildness EP, Dark Was The Yearling, a 12-track collection, was born out of a gradual, introspective writing and recording process. Penning music, the musician explains, is a art form he finds is best never rushed by preconceived expectations or false expectations. “I’m not one of those artists who can sit down and write a song a day,” he says. “I wish it happened more but it can’t be forced.” Linaberry first developed a deep-seeded love for classic folk and blues — the sort best exemplified by early torchbearers like Blind Lemon Jefferson and Lightnin’ Hopkins — 15 years ago after being given a collection of albums entitled “American Roots Music” by his father. He subsequently fully immersed himself in it. “It reshaped my musical landscape,” says Linaberry, whose upstate New York upbringing upstate found him deeply entrenched in the local hardcore punk-rock scene. “What made me fall in love with the punk scene, I heard again in those records,” he offers. “And I haven’t turned back.” The idea and promise of timeless music, the kind uncontaminated by passing trend, was greatly appealing to Linaberry. In old-time folk and blues he found “something so precious that you care for. I don’t know where it’s going,” he adds, but I will always be moving in this direction and falling in love with these songs and finding new artists that I can relate to.” The Bones of J.R. Jones is an ever-evolving project — one that Linaberry will continue to spread via his mesmerizing live shows. Don’t expect to see him with other musicians anytime soon. Performing solo, he says, “became a matter of necessity for me to reach what I felt was an accurate portrait of what I wanted to represent." “For me my biggest fear with doing a one-man band is it would become a gimmick,” he offers. “Like ‘Oh, he’s the one-man band guy.’ I’ve put those reservations aside and fully embraced it." SUSTO - Smoking Outside | Audiotree Live

Download & stream SUSTO on Audiotree Live -- SUSTO is a southern-folk/indie-americana band who write ballads delivered with a whiskey-soaked growl filtered through gritty, swirling production. Band leader and wordsmith Justin Osborne’s conversational lyrical style was initially inspired by the straight-forward speech of locals in his hometown in rural South Carolina. Osborne continued to take cues from locals, finding himself transfixed by the “fearless storytelling” of Trova Musicians while living in Havana, Cuba. The result is a collection of brooding tunes rife with dark textures and acute self-discovery. Check out the performance by SUSTO on Audiotree Live. Recorded on August 10, 2016, in Chicago, IL. Lyrics: i said i thought it would be colder - you put your head upon my shoulder - ain't it funny how time just seems to run - what the hell have you been doing - not too sure guess just mostly moving - i've been spinning for so long - now i guess i'm spun like the widest river - like the brightest morn - there is hope where you can't see it - there is a light after the storm - but won't you help me to get thru it - i've been flailing like a child - my mistakes they are so many - for my loving heart is wild not quite old - but far from young - body bold with a youthful tongue - like a kiss held out of context - i can't separate my mind - we can set this boat on fire - we can leave it all behind like the widest river - like the brightest morn - there is hope just up ahead - there is a shelter safe and warm - but won't you help me to get to it - i've been selfish i have lied - my mistakes they are so many - for my ruthless heart is wild - like the winds that shear the plains - and cut you down to size - none but the dust and seeds remain - they root themselves and rise like the widest river - like the brightest morn - there is hope where you can't see it - there is a light after the storm - won't you help me to get thru it - i've been flailing like a child - my mistakes they are so many - for my weary heart is wild

Billy Bragg & Joe Henry - Gentle On My Mind - (Official Video)

Taken from 'Shine a Light: Field Recordings from the Great American Railroad'. In March 2016 Billy Bragg and Joe Henry, guitars in hand, boarded a Los Angeles-bound train at Chicago’s Union Station looking to reconnect with the culture of American railroad travel and the music it inspired. Winding along 2,728 miles of track over four days, the pair recorded classic railroad songs in waiting rooms and at trackside while the train paused to pick up passengers. 'The Million Things That Never Happened' is out now on CD, vinyl and Digitally: Follow Billy Bragg: Instagram: Twitter: Facebook: Joe Henry - Director : Ray Foley DOP: Mark Lindsay Editor: Tim Hansberry Lyrics: Its knowing that your door is always open and your path is free to walk That makes me tends to leave my sleeping bag rolled up And stashed behind your couch Its knowing I'm not shackled By forgotten words and bars And the ink stains that have dried upon some lines That keeps you on the back roads By the rivers of my memories Keeps you ever gentle On my mind Its not clinging to the rocks and ivy Planted on the columns Now that binds me Or something that somebody said Because they thought we fit together walkin Its just knowing that the world Will not be cursed or forgiven When I walk along some railway track and find That your waiting on the back roads By the rivers of my memory For hours your just gentle on my mind Though the wheat fields And the clothes lines and the Junkyards and the highways come between us And some other womans crying To her daughter cause she turned And I was gone Well i still might run in silence Tears of joy might stain my face And the summer sun might burn me Till I'm blind But not to where I cannot see you walkin down the back roads By the rivers slowing gentle On My Mind Well dip my cup of soup back From a dribblin cauldron in some train yard My beard rough and the coal pile And a dirty hat pulled low Across my face Through cuptail drivin tin can I pretend to hold you to my breast and find That your waiting on the back roads By the rivers of my memory Ever smilin ever gentle on my mind #BillyBragg #JoeHenry #TheMillionThingsThatNeverHappened #ShineALight

Download: Subscribe: Official stream from Wah Wah 45s. Distributed by Kudos Records. On iTunes: On Amazon: More music playlists: Album: Favourite Worry [ALBUM] Track: 4 of 10 Title: Darling What's Wrong? Artist: The Milk Label: Wah Wah 45s Cat#: WAHCD029 Formats: CD/Digital/LP Digital Release: 16th October 2015 Physical Release: 16th October 2015 About This Release: "An atmospheric return" -Clash Music "Between the latest incarnation of Arctic Monkeys and a soulful Paolo Nutini" -Gigwise Sometimes it takes a few bumps to find the right direction; often it involves experience, guts and self-belief to trust yourself and venture from one to find another. The Milk are a band that believe with utter conviction that they've now found their way. "Our second record, like many others before us, has been a life affirming but at times painful experience. For all the good we did on our first record, we felt that there we're many unanswered questions. It was important that this album put the record straight, not just for our fans and peers but for ourselves." - Dan Legresley Fuelled by a rediscovery of the music and artists that originally inspired their formation, the four walls of their studio were ablaze with a soundtrack of Bill Withers, Isaac Hayes and the Isley Brothers throughout the songwriting process for their new album. From the swagger of symphonic opener 'Wanderlust' to heartfelt ballad 'Lose That Way' to the thunderous blues of the closing title track; The Milk's confidence in these songs and their execution is clearly audible. Captured in a tireless outburst of creativity at the end of 2014, 'Favourite Worry' is The Milk at their soulful, honest and engaging best. "'Favourite Worry' is born from the difficulties that everyone feels as they move through life, the dreams that falter, the friendships that struggle or the love that falls away. Each song is born from this very personal atonement that each of us has had to reconcile ourselves with. It was vital that the record demonstrate the many years we have played together, the blood harmonies and sibling rhythm section. Just as importantly the need for the sound to reach deep into the guts of the listener, as so many of our influences do, was always at the forefront." - Dan Legresley Eager to share their new songs, 'Deliver Me' was released as a  limited 7" single in November 2014 - finding its way onto the playlists of BBC 6 Music's Lauren Laverne, Huey Morgan and Gilles Peterson - while The Milk's dedicated fans packed out Tufnell Park's The Dome for the band's triumphant live return. The band unveiled their new songs in full for the first time to an intimate sold out show at Hackney's Oslo in July to coincide with the release of single 'No Interruptions', one of the first songs written for 'Favourite Worry'. "'No Interruptions' provided us with a tone, musical flavour and a lyrical yardstick to which all of the other tracks on the album had to have in common. The song is about defiance and retribution, emotions that were common in the studio at that time." - Rick Nunn The Bees' Paul Butler, who proved his production mastery with Michael Kiwanuka's Mercury Prize nominated debut, invited the band to record at Chale Abbey, a medieval barn on the Isle of Wight. Guided by Butler, the sessions captured the genuine version of The Milk: the sounds and honesty of soul. "There's a lot to love about The Milk. Pretty much family they've been together so long, all have a focused passion on making the band work. They're equal in what each bring to the team, they practice more than any band I've met. They know what they want now, which is source of the real magic. That quality in bands is becoming rarer, but they've got it now." - Paul Butler (Producer) 'Favourite Worry' is set for release on 16th October 2015 through Wah Wah 45s. Following the release, The Milk play a headline UK tour this autumn. Each song is a real story about a musician from Oakland who experienced the highs of a million dollar record deal, the lows of a near fatal car accident that put him in a four-week coma, and is now in the phase of rebirth despite his playing hand being mangled. Negrito’s music emphasizes rawness and space. Slide guitar, drums, piano. Rather than update the Delta Blues, Fantastic Negrito leaves the original sounds of Lead Belly and Skip James intact, building bridges to a modern sound with loops and samples of his own live instruments. But the primary element that drives Fantastic Negrito’s music is uncut realness and zero concern for “pop” anything. Video Credits: Directed by Terrence Banks Edited by Jeremy Leaird-Koch
